Steelers Announce Pre-Game Activities For AFC Championship Game

PITTSBURGH ─ The Steelers are urging fans to be in their seats early for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets in order to enjoy live entertainment by national music sensations, which will highlight the day’s pre-game festivities. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa will perform his hit song, “Black and Yellow”, on the field. MTV recently named Khalifa as the Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010. Country superstar Martina McBride will sing the national anthem.

At halftime, country music legend Hank Williams Jr. will perform on the South Plaza.

As a tribute to the Steelers’ tremendous fan support, the team will take a special photograph 15 minutes prior to kickoff. The photographer will be on the field taking a panoramic photo of inside the stadium. Once the photo is posted online, fans will be able to zoom in and find themselves in the photo. Fans on Facebook will be able to link the photo to their profile and share with all of their Facebook friends. A digital copy of the photo will be available at www.facebook.com/steelers on Monday, Jan. 24.

Local servicemen and women will be honored on the field in a special welcome home ceremony for their service in each branch of the military. A total of 50 local servicemen and women will be recognized.

Billy Gardell, Pittsburgh native and star of the CBS Series, “Mike and Molly”, will lead a Terrible Towel Twirl along with Khalifa prior to kickoff. Zambelli International will then have a fireworks display from Point State Park.

"Wiz Khalifa Celebrates 'Black & Yellow' Going Gold With Hometown Concert" | MTV RAPFIX

By Hillary Crosley, with additional reporting by Jayson Rodriguez

"This week has been pretty special for Wiz Khalifa. In addition to learning that his breakout single "Black & Yellow" went Gold and releasing a "G-mix" for the track, the Pittsburgh, PA MC celebrated with a homecoming concert on Thursday (December 16).

On the same day, Wiz's camp released the "Black & Yellow G-Mix" featuring a few of the smokey MC's favorite rappers. Snoop Dogg, Juicy J and T-Pain guest on the track and while the trio of features might seem random, we support Khalifa's creative freedom.

Last month, following his arrest for weed possession, the Kush & OJ MC stopped by our offices to chat about the unlikely producers behind his now Gold-selling single.

"Stargate, they're really musical guys as well, any beat that I got from them was already sequenced so it's stuff that I listen for anyway when I make my music so when we got in the studio, we meshed really well," said Wiz. "It was kinda crazy because, you know, me being a rapper and them being pop, nobody knew where it was gonna go but then it ended up working out perfect."

The Norwegian pair, Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, were introduced to Wiz Khalifa through the MC's Atlantic Records A&R and, to the label's credit, the song's a rousing success the newcomer.

"It's going crazy right now, radio and the video's heating it up and I'm just real happy to have that crossover success—it's looking like we're having that crossover success that people were sketchy and didn't know if I was gonna be able to do that or not," said Wiz. "So with the single doing what it's doing, it's really helping me out." "

"Black and Yellow Fever: Top 15 Hit, Waken Baken Tour Has Everyone Buzzing About Rapper Wiz Khalifa" | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"A 'Dice grad 10 years older than Wiz, Mr. Grinberg had graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and was putting his experience as an assistant to Arista Records president L.A. Reid to work by forming Rostrum Records. Wiz was the second signing after Nitty, who scored a 2004 hit with "Nasty Girl."

Wiz dropped his first mixtape, "Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania," in 2005, followed the next year by a debut album, "Show and Prove," that proudly waved the colors of his "Pittsburgh Sound." In short time, "the kid spittin' flames" was sitting there on Rolling Stone's list of Artists to Watch. After a major-label bidding war, he signed to Warner Bros., where he released a single "Say Yeah" that went to No. 20 on Billboard's Hot Rap Tracks. After numerous delays for the album and obvious problems getting on the same page, his fast-track career hit a speed bump when he parted ways with the label.

He was back on Rostrum for a second album, "Deal or No Deal," that went to No. 1 on the iTunes hip-hop albums chart, and a mixtape, "Kush and Orange Juice," that moved more than a million downloads and made him the top trending topic on Twitter. This year he appeared on the covers of XXL magazine as one of the "Top 10 Freshmen" and The Source as "Rookie of the Year." In July, he beat out 19 other candidates, including Nicki Minaj, to be voted MTV's "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010."

That same month he signed to Atlantic Records, where he'll release his major-label debut in early 2011.

..."Everything's black and yellow in Pittsburgh," he says, during a phone interview in the midst of a New York media blitz that included a Vibe magazine photo shoot and live performance on BET. "It's just that hometown pride. When I was writing it, I was really just trying to do something that would be a good look for me and also represent where I'm from. I felt like that was a good notion for me and it paid off."

He had no idea it would shoot up into the Top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the first Pittsburgh-based artist to crack the Top 40 since Christina Aguilera in the '90s. Steelers players are tweeting #blackandyellow before games, Girl Talk had the crowd going nuts to it when he opened Stage AE, and Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber both sang it to the hometown crowd earlier this week. There's a beautiful irony in "Black and Yellow" actually going ... Gold.

"I didn't think it was going to be as popular as it is," he says. "I thought it was just going to be a set-up record, but it's gone crazy."

" 'Black and Yellow' benefited from everything that came before it," Mr. Grinberg says. "We had built up momentum on the independent side with Wiz's mixtapes, videos and tours. And it came to the point where Wiz's audience was really ready for an official single. Moreover, Atlantic's radio department is amazing. They let the record grow naturally, and when the right time revealed itself, they pushed the button, so to speak."
